Thomas Edison National Historical Park

The National Park Service preserves two connected West Orange destinations: the laboratory complex at 211 Main Street and Glenmont, the Edison family estate inside Llewellyn Park. The laboratory complex is the starting point for every Glenmont visit.

Laboratory ComplexExplore the Main Laboratory Building, Edison's library and work spaces, machine shops, historic industrial structures and a replica of the Black Maria motion-picture studio.
Glenmont MansionSeasonal house tours interpret the Edison family home. Tour capacity is limited, so visitors planning around the mansion should review current ticket availability before traveling.
Glenmont Grounds PassLlewellyn Park is a private gated community. Every visitor must first stop at the laboratory Visitor Center and obtain the National Park Service grounds pass required for entry to Glenmont.
Seasonal ScheduleThe park operates on a seasonal calendar and has regular closed days. Always check the current National Park Service hours, tour schedule and fees before making a special trip.
Important Glenmont sequence: Start at the Laboratory Complex Visitor Center at 211 Main Street. Pay the applicable park entrance fee or present an accepted pass, obtain the required Glenmont Grounds Pass, and then proceed to Llewellyn Park. A Glenmont tour ticket by itself does not replace the Grounds Pass.

Turtle Back Zoo & South Mountain Recreation Complex

The South Mountain Recreation Complex along Northfield Avenue and Cherry Lane is large enough to fill most of a day. Turtle Back Zoo is the centerpiece, but the surrounding complex creates several different ways to build a family outing.

Turtle Back ZooSee more than 130 animal species, wildlife habitats, keeper programs and family attractions. Animal experiences and some attractions are weather, maintenance and animal-health dependent.
Zoo Train & Family AttractionsThe zoo's miniature train travels through South Mountain Reservation, while additional zoo attractions can include the carousel, playground and animal experiences.
Essex County Codey ArenaThe two-sheet ice facility hosts public skating, hockey, lessons, figure skating and events. Session schedules change throughout the year.
TreeTop AdventureAerial obstacle courses and a zip line provide a more active experience. Advance reservations are encouraged for course participation.
MiniGolf SafariAdd miniature golf to a zoo day or make it a standalone family activity within the recreation complex.
The WaterfrontThe reservoir area includes a 1.7-mile walking path, paddle boating, sitting areas and Regatta Playground.
Zoo parking: Turtle Back Zoo currently provides free visitor parking in designated lots and garages throughout the recreation complex. On weekdays, the Park 'n Ride garage closest to the main road is not part of the free zoo parking arrangement, so follow current signs and staff directions.
